The presentation of Mexican cinema “Mexico of Frida Kahlo“

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of partner cooperation between Łódź and Puebla, the Film Museum in Łódź, in cooperation with the Embassy of the United States of Mexico in Poland and the City of Łódź, have the pleasure of inviting you to: Presentation of Mexican Cinema "Mexico of Frida Kahlo".

On the occasion of the exhibition “ Frida and Diego. Long live the life! “, Which is presented in the Film Museum until January 3, 2018, we invite you to participate in the free screenings realized as part of the Mexican cinema cycle at the Cinematography Cinema in Łódź (Plac Zwycięstwa 1). The presented film show the socio-political and artistic context in which Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived. It also includes the projection of the first film about Frida, produced and filmed in Mexico: “Frida, Living Nature“ (1983). Most of the films that make up the “Mexico of Frida Kahlo “ were produced and shot during the period known as the “Golden Age of Mexican Cinema“. This period lasted about 30 years (from the beginning of the 1930s to around 1960). During this time, the Mexican film industry achieved high quality production, gained international recognition and was financially successful. There have been many production companies and a generation of directors and actors, who are still recognized today as icons of Mexican cinema and of all Latin America. The “Mexico of Frida Kahlo “ series presents some of the great productions of that era, as well as a wealth of themes and genres characteristic for it. At the Kinematograf Cinema in Łódź, in October, two films from the Mexican classics will be shown: 

- 14 October 2017, at 3:00pm, “Macario” (1959), dir. Roberto Gavaldón The film "Macario" directed by Roberto Gavaldón '(1959) was one of the most famous films of his era and the first Mexican production nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The film tells the story of a peasant named Macario, who is obsessed with poverty and death. In his stubbornness he decides to endure hunger until he finds a turkey that he could eat without sharing. His wife steals a turkey for him and Macario goes to eat him in the woods.There, he refuses to share the turkey with God and the Devil and only shares it when Death appears to him. With gratitude, Death gives Macario healing water, thanks to which the hero begins to perform miracles.  

- 28 October 2017 at 3:00 pm, “ Pearl “( 1947) dir. Emilio Fernández The script for the film “ Pearl “ directed by Emilio Fernández (1947) was written based on the great work of John Steinbeck. Quino and his wife, who live in a poor fishing village, are appalled when their son is bitten by a scorpion. A local doctor, a greedy foreigner, refuses to help him, and the child is saved by a witch doctor.When Quino finds a beautiful pearl at the bottom of the sea, he arouses the greed of the doctor and his brother who are capable of possessing a pear at all costs. Participation in all film screenings made as part of the “ Mexico Frida Kahlo “ series is free!
