Łódź mediation program as an example for Polish judiciary

The number of cases in Polish courts is still growing. In order to reduce the workload in the courts, judges and mediators from Łódź launched a mediation program in the city. The Ministry of Justice decided to use the ideas from Łódź because mediation is 13 times faster and 5 times cheaper than a court ruling.

In order to reduce the workload in the courts, judges and mediators from Łódź launched a mediation program in the city.

In Łódź, the mediation program was launched in March 2018, in the District Court Łódź-Śródmieście. Then, in the District Court in Łódź and in a District Court Łódź-Widzew. The program was the result of an understanding between 5 organisations dealing with mediation. They established Łódzkie Porozumienie Mediatorów. Thanks to them, mediation on-call duties were implemented in courts.

When a judge walks in the courtroom, a recess is announced, and parties are invited to a special room. A mediator waits for them in the room who tries to convince them to settle a case amicably. After a discussion with the mediator, parties decide whether they want to benefit from the mediation. If at least one of the parties shows interest in the solution proposed by the mediator, he/she submits a relevant request. During the mediation, parties agree on how they conclude a mediation settlement.
