As a result of this, during sudden rain, water was discharged from the upper part of the river and, in combination with the Dolistówka River, caused flooding in the centre of Białystok and below areas. In order to avoid this, a return to the natural shape of the river was assumed. The work included regulation, elimination of straight sections of the river, construction of ponds, earth-fill coffer-dams, reinforced concrete division and stone and wood threshold. This increased the protection against flooding and expanded re-meandered areas (sedge-moss meadows, new areas for birds). The investment was financed from the budget of the city of Białystok.
Good practices from other cities– changing the course of the Biała River in Białystok
Re-meandering, i.e. the reconstruction of the Biała River riverbed, is the first stage of construction of the Botanical Park in the river valley. The investment consisted of changing the course of the riverbed, which had previously been artificially straightened.
