One of the key universities in the region is the University of Łódź which is currently one of the largest Polish universities. It has 12 faculties: Biology and Environmental Protection, Chemistry, Economics and Sociology, Philosophy and History, Physics and Applied Information Technology, Mathematics and IT, Geographical Science, Educational Sciences, Law and Administration, International Studies and Political Studies, as well as Administration. Students study 80 fields of study and 167 specialties. University of Łódź offers also PhD studies and post-graduate studies, including MBA. The university performs also around 100 international agreements on cooperation with other higher education facilities. There are around 40 thousand students studying there.
At the university, numerous research and development centres operate, among others: European Studies Centre, Research and Translation Centre, Scientific and research Centre for European Spatial Planning Policy and Local Development, Research Centre for Christian Thought, Scientific and Research Centre for Women’s Studies, and the Centre of Polish Committee of Cooperation with Alliance Française, as well as Regional Centre for Patent Information.
At the university, there is also one of the largest and most modern research libraries in Poland.
