Biotech/Pharma

Pharmaceutical and biotech sectors are one of the most innovative sectors in Łódź region. With the presence of the most dynamically developing Polish pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and the region’s advanced scientific and technical facilities, Łódź and the surrounding areas constitute a perfect location for the investors from the sector. 

So far, favourable investment conditions in the Łódź were recognised by a number of local and international pharmaceutical and cosmetics companies operating production sites, R&D centres and modern distribution centres. 

Apart from the favourable central location and competitive labour costs, the development of the sector is facilitated by a number of factors: 

  • A large number of entities active in the field of pharmaceuticals and medical materials. Łódź Voivodeship is the third region in Poland (after Mazowieckie and Małopolskie) in the number of companies active in this sector (8,6,% of entities active in Poland). 
  • A strong scientific and research background educating future staff for the needs of the sector, including in particular:  
    • Medical University of Łódź: Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Military Medicine, Faculty of Biomedical Science and Post-graduate Education, Faculty of Health Science; 
    • University of Łódź: Faculty of Biology and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Science;
    • Polish Academy of Science (PAN): Institute of Medical Biology;
    • Polish Mother’s Memorial Hospital Research Institute (ICZMP);
    • Nofer Institute of Occupational Medicine;
    • Bionanopark: Industrial Biotechnology Laboratory, Molecular and Nanostructural Biophysics Laboratory. 
  • The growing number of startups active in medicine, pharma and biotechnology.  
  • Support offered by regional authorities. In line with the Regional Innovation Strategy for the Łódź Voivodeship, the pharmaceutical and cosmetics sector is one of regional priority sectors and the Łódź Voivodeship is intended to be a strong industrial and scientific centre in the medical, pharmaceutical and cosmetics sector.
