Duopolis

In Poland, the development of the residential and office infrastructure, as well as of road and railway connections, has given rise to a new example of the natural collaboration between two large agglomerations, localized at a distance of approx. 120 kilometers: Warsaw and Łódź – or the Polish capital city with almost 1,8 million inhabitants and the third largest city in Poland with 690 thousand inhabitants. It is easy to count that the total number of inhabitants of this Duopolis amounts to almost 4 million and considerably exceeds the number of residents of most of other agglomerations in the CEE region.

DEVELOPED TRANSPORT NETWORK

  • Rail: Łódź-Warsaw train travel time is now approx. 75 minutes. After the infrastructure modernisation and the construction of the high-speed rail scheme and the Polish Central Communication Hub the time will shorten to approx. 40 minutes.
  • Road: Thanks to the A2 motorway the journey between the cities takes from one and a half hours. The capacity of the road will be improved and more traffic lanes will be added.

MODERN BUSINESS CENTRE

  • The New Centre of Łódź is a modern district with offices, residential estates, retail and services premises as well as cultural establishments, located in the strict city centre in the direct proximity of the newly redeveloped Fabryczna Railway Station offering direct trains to Warsaw and many other destinations in Poland.
  • Once the city tunnel (currently under construction) is completed, the station will become one of the major intermodal national hubs.

COST EFFICIENCY

  • The main differences between Łódź and Warsaw lie in the costs of employment, renting costs and the competition on the labour market.
  • As far as the business services sector is concerned, there are still differences in salaries between the cities.

HUMAN RESOURCES

  • Łódź is the third largest Polish city and one of the biggest labour markets in the country.
  • Łódź is also one of the major academic centres in Poland (18 higher education institutions and 30 research and development units). Every year approx. 20 graduates enter the local labour market.
  • In 2020, almost 26 thousand were employed in the BSS sector [ABSL data].

COMPLEMENTARY BUSINESSES OPERATING IN THE CITY

  • Business Services: front office (Warsaw) - back office (Łódź).
  • Industry: management and headquarters (Warsaw) - R&D and IT (Łódź).
  • Logistics: management (Warsaw) - investment sites (Łódź and surrounding areas).
