Cooperation between Łódź and Lyon was initiated with the exchange and cooperation protocol, signed in 1991. At the first stage of contacts, Łódź building a democratic, market-oriented local government, received significant support from Lyon in the form of many trainings and organizational and legal assistance in the field of financial management, organization of municipal administration services, land and real estate management, introduction of IT to services, rehabilitation of social housing and strategies of communication. Lyon organized the internships and implemented expert study visits in the field of the city management and land development. Exchange and organizational support also covered such important areas of social life as: bar, tax chambers, health service, judiciary and energy.
The significant role in the field of mutual contacts was teaching French and specific disciplines. From the beginning, many students and teachers exchanges were organized, then the cooperation covered universities – Lumiere and Jean Moulin Universities with the University of Łódź, Ecole Central with the Łódź University of Technology, Claude Bernard University of Lyon with the Medical Academy in Lodz. Annual youth exchange was also undertaken by Jean Perrin High School and Copernicus High School no. 1 in Łódź, as well as junior high school in Tonkin and High School no. 13 in Łódź. Universities also conducted researches together – including thanks to the French language education programs implemented by the Catholic Craft School, the Main School and the School of Management from Lyon. The support from Lyon resulted in the establishment in Łódź the Sales and Negotiation Institute and the Łódź Regional Development Agency. In 1994, the Fashion University was founded, based on cooperation with the University of Lyon II. The prestigious faculty of International Engineering (IFE) has been hosting many groups of young people from Lodz as well as French students as a part of the European exchange for years. You can get a French Master’s degree from the University of Lyon III and increase your chances in the labor market. The inflow of French capital to Łódź is the result of many years of development of the economic relations between the two cities – for example the relations of Łódź Chamber of Commerce and Industry with the Chamber in Lyon trainings for the management and directors of the companies. Currently, companies such as Dalkia, Accord (ibis Hotel), Compin, Hutchison, IDES and many hypermarkets operate in Łódź. However, Łódź and Lyon are not only strong economic and academic centers, but also the cities with huge cultural potential, with strong textile and movie traditions, and with the unique architectural and multicultural heritage. The following museums started cooperation: Łódź Textile Museum and Musée des Textiles et l`Art Decoratif, contemporary art museums, ballet schools. It is not without reason that the architectural team of Sud Architecte Lyon and the French investor APSYS undertook the revitalization of Izrael Poznanski’s textile factories. Film traditions also connect both cities. It is worth recalling that in 1896 in the Helenow Park the first outdoor film screening took place with the help of a cinematograph (the invention of the Lumiere Brothers), and such projections, pioneering on a Polish scale, were carried out continuously by the Krzeminski Brothers in their cinema at 120 Piotrkowska Street.
